HISTORY OF JEWISH COMMUNITY OF SPLIT
The Jewish community is present in the territory of Split from ancient times. Reforming the Imperial Palace in the medieval commune, the Jews still have their community that continually lives today.
It’s members were mostly respectable members of society who were very much contributed to its overall development. They were also some of the most prominent founders in Split. The very first bank in Split founded by Daniel Rodrigo, and founder of the first Split’s book-stores Vid Morpurgo.
At the same time, Sigmund Freud spent some time in Split and, who knows, maybe it’s right here where he found inspiration for his theory of psychoanalysis.
The third oldest synagogue in Europe is situated within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, and the Jewish cemetery on the slopes of Marjan hill is the best preserved in the region.
